General Emergency Procedures

When emergencies arise, contact Caltech Campus Security Dispatch: 

Dial 5000 from any campus telephone or (626) 395-5000 from anywhere else.  Do NOT call 911 Security can respond much quicker than Pasadena emergency services and will make this notification as necessary.

Medical Emergency

  • Remain calm.
  • Notify Campus Security Dispatch at x5000 from any campus telephone or (626) 395-5000 from anywhere else such as your cell phone.
    • Provide the location of the emergency and a call back number.
    • Stay on the phone if possible.
    • Make sure the scene is safe before you enter.
    • Make a note of the victim’s symptoms/conditions and be prepared to give them to the dispatcher.
    • Do NOT move victim.

Earthquake 

  • Take shelter under a solid object. 
  • Wait for shaking to stop. 
  • Do NOT use elevator. 
  • Notify Campus Security of serious injuries. 
  • Do NOT go outside unless instructed to do so. 

Fire 

  • Activate alarm. 
  • Notify Campus Security Dispatch at x5000 from any campus telephone or (626) 395-5000 from anywhere else such as your cell phone.
    • Provide the location of the emergency and a call back number.
    • Evacuate to the designated assembly area.
    • Leave through nearest exit; do NOT run. 
    • Do NOT use elevators. 
    • Close doors behind you; do NOT lock them. 
    • Report to an assigned rally point (You must be accounted for). 
    • Wait for administrator in charge to give verbal okay to re-enter the building.

Suspicious Person on Campus

  • Notify Campus Security Dispatch at x5000 from any campus telephone or (626) 395-5000 from anywhere else such as your cell phone.
    • Provide the location of the emergency and a call back number
    • Stay on the phone if possible
    • Be prepared to give a detailed description of the subject including:
      • Physical – Sex, ethnicity, height, build, weight, hair color.
      • Clothing – Dark, light, jackets, hats
      • Weapons – firearms, knives, blunt objects, explosives.
      • Demeanor – nervous, angry, aggressive.
      • Direction of travel and last known location.
      • If the suspicious person appears to present an immediate threat, initiate the four “S’s” – Seek, Secure, Silence and Stay.
  • SEEK
    • Seek shelter in a building; go into the nearest room with a door.
    • Stay where you are if you are already in a safe place.
    • Do not come to campus if you are off-campus.
  • SECURE
    • Close and lock the doors and barricade if possible.
    • Close the blinds and curtains.
  • SILENCE
    • Turn off audio equipment.
    • Put you cell phone on vibrate (DO NOT SHUT IT OFF)
    • Turn off HVAC, heating and air conditioning where possible.
  • STAY
    • Stay calm, remain where you are and wait for further instructions from emergency personnel.
