Security Bulletin: Laptop Thefts on Campus
Over the past few weeks, we have had an increase in thefts on campus. Since mid-June, five laptops and 10 bicycles have been stolen from campus.
One laptop was stolen from a secured vehicle in the Holliston parking structure; two laptops were stolen from public areas, including from a public event held in Cahill; and two laptops were stolen from offices. Bicycles continue to be a target of thieves, not only on campus, but also around the City of Pasadena.
The incidents on campus appear to be occurring primarily during the week, in the late afternoon and evening hours. Currently we have no suspect description. However, Caltech Security is working with the Pasadena Police Department to locate the stolen items, and with Pasadena Police and Pasadena City College Police to reduce the occurrences on and around campus. Caltech Security has increased both foot and vehicle patrols around campus.
Please contact Security at (626) 395-5000 (or x5000) to report any suspicious activity. Do not confront any suspicious persons on campus. Instead, call Campus Security immediately. Your safety is our primary concern. Items can be replaced so DO NOT attempt to contact or confront anyone you suspect is engaging in suspicious or criminal activity.
As a community we share the responsibility of securing property, doors, and reporting suspicious activity. We are asking for your help in making the campus as safe as possible by taking the following steps:
- Report suspicious activity to Security immediately.
- Secure your valuables in locked compartments.
- Lock your office doors when leaving for any amount of time.
- Do not leave personal items unattended.
- Report individuals who "tailgate" or enter secure buildings and restricted areas without keys or the proper credentials by slipping in behind someone else.
- Do not prop open exterior doors.
- Trust your instincts. If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, get out or get away and call Security immediately.
If you need emergency help, call x5000 on campus or (626) 395-5000 if you are off campus, or call 911.
