Caltech Security Bulletin – Unauthorized Entry/Tailgating into Student Residence Houses

February 27, 2026

Over the past few weeks, Security has received multiple reports of unauthorized individuals entering the residential houses. A review of camera footage indicates that many of these individuals either gained access after being let in by unsuspecting students or followed residents into the building without authorization.

It may seem like a kind gesture to hold the door open for someone or allow them to follow you into a residence hall after you've accessed it with your UID card – but this practice, often called "tailgating," can create serious safety risks for everyone in the building.

Unauthorized individuals who gain entry may not have the same connection to the campus community and could pose threats such as theft, property damage, or personal harm. Residence hall access systems are designed to protect students by ensuring only authorized residents and approved guests enter the facility. When someone bypasses that process, it undermines the security measures in place to keep our community safe.

What you can do:

  • Always use your UID card – never allow others to enter on your access.
  • Politely direct anyone without a card to Security or the Card Office for proper access credentials.
  • Never feel pressured to let someone in, even if they appear to belong there.
  • Report suspicious activity to Security immediately.
  • Report individuals who "tailgate" or enter secure buildings and restricted areas without keys or the proper credentials by slipping in behind someone else.
  • Do not prop open exterior doors.

Trust your instincts. If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, get out or get away and call Security immediately.

If you are on campus and need emergency help, call x5000 or use your Everbridge 360 app. If you are off campus or calling from a cell phone, call (626) 395-5000 or dial 911.

Heighten your security awareness and remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Whether you're at work, at home, or out-and-about, be alert to and report suspicious activity. Know your surroundings and who or what should or shouldn't be there. If you see something suspicious, report it immediately. Don't make judgments about what may or may not be a serious situation and don't assume that someone else has called Security. Safety and security is a shared responsibility. A moment of awareness can prevent a serious incident. Protect yourself, protect your neighbors, and don't let tailgating happen on your watch.
